sam rose phillips
Sam is a filmmaker, poet, and photographer based in Nuu-chah-nulth Territory on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Specialising in off-grid, remote storytelling, she focuses her work on human-wildlife stories and their significance to coastal communities. She has filmed on remote islands immersing herself with whale researchers, spent seven months as Sea Shepherd’s sole filmmaker and Campaign Leader onboard, and supported Indigenous communities across the coast. She has worked with Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ and Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation mentoring youth in cultural filmmaking projects. Sam’s strengths are as a strategic self-starter, collaborative leader, and community builder. Her effective communication skills span diverse mediums and she remains dedicated to leaving the world better than she found it. She is currently directing her first feature-length documentary with seal folk films & the National Film Board of Canada.
When Sam's hands aren't actively engaging with stories, they're happiest when nesting at the homestead with her partner and pup, covered in soil from her budding garden, and paddling her kayak around the temperate rainforest she calls home.
